Client Need
PatentFreedom is a gated business community catering to intellectual property professionals to help them better manage and defend their companies against patent assertions and litigations from non-practicing entities (NPEs), who seek nuisance-value settlements through frivolous patent infringement claims.
PatentFreedom approached OpenCrowd to help them build a service platform where subscribing companies could get informed about the NPEs, get connected with peer operating companies and anonymously or openly collaborate to strategize their defense based on community intelligence.

What OpenCrowd Did
- With a deep and practical understanding of Web 2.0 implementations, we collaborated closely with Patent Freedom to help visualize their concept, bring it to life and provided a service that could potentially change the balance between the operating companies and the NPEs in the intellectual property space.
- Given the principal requirements of anonymity, content management and community sharing we created an innovative, flexible and extensible gated network that allowed users to securely and confidentially collaborate with their peers.
- In a short span of 12 weeks, we helped PatentFreedom strategize, visualize and build out the solution to meet the unique requirements of the service offering. Following the initial launch we released new features updates every 3 - 4 weeks.
Outcome
- PatentFreedom was able to launch and operate its business using this platform to meet its customers needs within its budget and time parameters.
- Over the last 2 years PatentFreedom has established a subscriber base that includes a majority of the top technology companies pursed by NPEs.
