Client Overview
Startup business spun off from an established intellectual property consultancy, the firm provides a gated business community for intellectual property professionals to better manage and defend themselves against assertions and litigations from non-practicing entities (NPEs), who generate their revenues primarily through patent licensing. This service allows subscribing companies to get informed about the NPEs, get connected with peer operating companies to collaborate and strategize their defense and potentially take pre-emptive action based on community intelligence.

Business Challenge
The uniqueness of the solution was that it had to allow for a community to be built around intellectual property professionals whose identity and company affiliation had to be kept confidential (unless the company chose to disclose their identity), while simultaneously enabling a vibrant community that would share information and collaborate with each other so they would be better informed in defending themselves against the NPEs. The design had to be flexible enough to support evolving subscription models and the unique configurations required to support the sales and marketing efforts.
What OpenCrowd Did
Gated Business Community
Collaboration
With a deep and practical understanding of Web 2.0 implementations, we worked closely with our client to help visualize their concept and bring it to life and provide a service that could potentially change the balance between the operating companies and the NPEs in the intellectual property space.

Innovation
Building on the principal requirements of anonymity, community sharing and a tightly controlled environment, we created a customized, flexible and extensible gated network that allowed users to securely and confidentially collaborate with their peers, who could be potential competitors, while allowing them to choose their desired level of anonymity and subscribe to the service at the level that best suited their needs in terms of usage and content access.

Speed
Using our SPEED methodology in a short span of 12 weeks, we helped our client strategize, visualize and build out the solution to meet the unique requirements of the service offering. Following the launch we have been continually adding new features every 3 - 4 weeks.
Business Benefit
  • Companies can share information with similarly situated companies using discussions, blogs, comments and wikis, to collaborate and better defend themselves against NPEs. They can do so anonymously, or choose to disclose their identity depending on their particular situation.
  • The user interface design makes it easy for the user to quickly get the information they need and interact with the community.
