Cloud Taxonomy

Overview
Cloud Taxonomy

The Cloud Taxonomy site was created to help IT users more easily navigate the cloud computing landscape, provide information on cloud computing products, and create a dialog between cloud computing services vendors and consumers as well as developers to foster further understanding and adoption of cloud based solutions. Our original Cloud Taxonomy was a widely cited graphic which we knew would never be able to deliver the breadth and depth of information on products as we'd like to provide. The interactive manifestation of the Cloud Taxonomy has allowed us to share much more about cloud computing services than ever before.

Choice of Technology

Given that this site is all about the cloud computing products and services, it was but natural to use a cloud computing platform for development and deployment. We decided to develop this site utilzing our Django framework integrated with Google's App Engine platform for the following reasons:

  • Google AppEngine is one of the front-runner in cloud Platform as a Service domain
  • Language support for both Python and Java
  • Ease of deployment
  • Application management tools
  • Elastic computing
  • Out of the box support for features highlighted in the graphic below
